A recent spike in illegal border crossings in the Swanton Sector covering parts of Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York has raised concerns among residents in the Northeast Kingdom. A viral photo captured by a game camera shows several men, one wearing a turban, walking south through the woods near the U.S.-Canadian border in Newport Center. Justin Leblanc, the homeowner who shared the photo, expressed safety concerns for his family and the community.
Neighbors in the area have reported encounters with migrants on their properties, with some speculating about the men’s intentions. While some have expressed concerns about border security and terrorism, experts point out that the number of people crossing illegally is relatively small and driven by conflicts in the Middle East leading to human migration.
Residents in the area have found tents in their backyards, prompting fear and unease among the community. Migrants are believed to be crossing the border illegally and then being picked up by unknown individuals in vehicles on Leadville Road. Border Patrol has been actively searching for migrants who trigger detection systems in the woods.
The number of apprehensions at the border has increased significantly in recent years, with officials detaining over 19,000 people from 97 different countries last year alone. Despite some apprehensions and detentions in Newport Center, residents like Leblanc are calling for increased enforcement to address the ongoing issue of illegal border crossings.
