Convicted man responsible for deaths of 4 relatives and pregnant woman during argument about curfew as a teenager

Raymond Childs III, a 21-year-old Indianapolis man, was convicted of six counts of murder, including the shooting deaths of five people, including family members and a pregnant woman, in January 2021. Childs was also found guilty of attempted murder and carrying a handgun without a license. The killings stemmed from an argument over Childs staying out late, and he was accused of methodically shooting the victims in different rooms of the house. One victim, a 19-year-old girlfriend, died along with her unborn son. Childs’ 15-year-old brother was also shot but survived by fleeing the house.

After a mistrial in his first trial due to a witness confronting Childs in front of the jury, the jury deliberated for about three hours before reaching a guilty verdict. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears described the crime as unfathomable, and said the verdict provided justice for the victims. Childs is facing a potential sentence of 40 to 65 years in prison on each murder count, 20 to 40 years for the attempted murder charge, and one to six years for carrying a handgun without a license. Childs’ sentencing is scheduled for January 7, and his attorney did not provide immediate comment. The prosecutor commended the trial team, law enforcement, and witnesses for their dedication to seeking justice for the victims.
