DOJ: Trump supporter with gun charged for planning to kill FBI agents on Jan. 6

Edward Kelley, a Donald Trump supporter, is facing charges for his involvement in the Capitol riot on January 6th, 2021. He is also accused of plotting to kill FBI agents investigating him in December 2022. Kelley, who is an anti-abortion activist, allegedly breached the Capitol armed with a gun and wore a sweatshirt with the initials TCAPP. Prosecutors presented evidence suggesting that Kelley had a concealed weapon holster on his person during the attack. Kelley is one of few suspects still in pre-trial custody for his actions on January 6th, with his trial scheduled to take place in November.

During the attack, Kelley was seen taking selfies in the Senate chamber where Vice President Mike Pence had been seated. He also urged his wife to download encrypted messaging app Signal and expressed disbelief in the news, using language similar to Trump’s. Prosecutors argued that Kelley’s actions were part of a group effort to breach the Capitol and should be held accountable for the unprecedented attack that had not been seen since the War of 1812. More than 1,500 individuals have been charged in connection with the Capitol riot, with over 1,100 convictions and hundreds sentenced to incarceration. Kelly faces a range of charges for his role in the events of January 6th, including civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, and assault of officers.
