Vermont man faces charges following infant’s overdose in Charlestown, authorities say.

A nine-month-old child in Charlestown, New Hampshire, survived a suspected overdose after ingesting powdered drugs that were allegedly dropped on the floor by a visitor. The visitor, identified as Matthew Howard, 30, from Proctorsville, Vt., is facing charges of aggravated assault and falsifying physical evidence in relation to the incident. Additionally, Claremont police are pursuing charges against Howard for possession of fentanyl.

On September 19, emergency services in Claremont were called to Main and Union Streets, where they found the child and their mother en route to the hospital. Narcan was administered to stabilize the child before being transported to Valley Regional Hospital and later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, where the child ultimately recovered.

The incident occurred while Howard was visiting Meadowview Apartments in Charlestown, where he accidentally dropped a bag of powdered drugs on the floor. The child came across the drugs, leading to the overdose. Howard admitted to flushing the bag after the child’s overdose was discovered by authorities.

The New Hampshire Division for Children, Youth and Families is involved in the case, and the Sullivan County Attorney’s Office is reviewing the incident for potential presentation to a grand jury. The Charlestown Police Department is actively investigating the matter to ensure justice is served in this unfortunate and dangerous situation.
