A new homeless shelter is set to open at the Waterbury Armory in Vermont this week, offering housing for up to 10 families or 40 individuals until April 1. The shelter is part of a plan to assist families who were previously exited from the Hotel-Motel Voucher Program due to budget changes. The state will select the families to be housed in the shelter, and there will be no walk-in option available. A public meeting will be held by the Waterbury Selectboard on October 30 for residents to discuss the shelter, with both in-person and virtual attendance options. This shelter is the first of three emergency housing facilities to be established in Waterbury, Williston, and Montpelier in response to the need created by families exiting the voucher program. The shelters are part of ongoing efforts by state officials to address homelessness and help families in need find stable housing. Residents are encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more about the shelter and how they can support those in their community who are experiencing homelessness.
