Alice Youngblut, a suspect in a shooting incident that resulted in the death of Border Patrol agent David Maland, appeared in court wearing a red prison jumpsuit and a surgical mask. She did not acknowledge her estranged parents who were present in the gallery. Youngblut was injured in the shooting, and her companion, Felix Bauckholt, was killed during the exchange of gunfire with Border Patrol agents.
Investigators have linked Youngblut and Bauckholt to a fringe group of activists on the West Coast responsible for several killings in California and Pennsylvania. Youngblut’s fiance, Maximilian B. Snyder, is charged with the murder of an 82-year-old man in California. The guns used in the Vermont shooting were purchased by someone linked to the murder of Richard and Rita Zajko in Pennsylvania.
Youngblut and Snyder are allegedly part of a cultish group known as Zizians, led by Jack “Ziz” LaSota. The group shares beliefs about artificial intelligence, veganism, and animal rights. LaSota, who was arrested for obstruction of justice in connection with the Zajko murder, remains a fugitive.
Prosecutors say Youngblut is estranged from her parents and was reported missing in Washington state last May. She was studying computer science at the University of Washington. The investigation into the shootings and the connection to the fringe group and other murders continues. For more information, contact Kevin Cullen at kevin.cullen@globe.com.
