British tennis star Emma Raducanu recently revealed that she was so distraught after seeing her stalker in the stands during a recent match that she wasn’t sure if she could finish. The 22-year-old former U.S. Open champion opened up about the distressing incident at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she was visibly upset and struggled to continue playing after spotting the man fixated on her during her match. Raducanu had to take a breather and hide behind the umpire’s chair before the man was escorted out by security. She eventually lost the match and took a week off before returning to the tour.
The man had been present at her previous matches in Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Doha, and approached her off the court in Dubai, causing her distress. Although Dubai Police detained the man and he signed a restraining order agreeing to keep his distance from Raducanu, she ultimately decided not to press charges. The incident prompted the Women’s Tennis Association to ban the man from future tournaments.
Despite the troubling encounter, Raducanu expressed gratitude for the support from her fans and decided to continue competing at the Indian Wells tournament in California. She will face Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in the first round, with the potential to compete against Coco Gauff in the third round. Raducanu, who gained fame after winning the 2021 U.S. Open at 18, currently ranks 55 in the world. She spoke about feeling better and being glad she chose to continue competing despite the incident in Dubai.
