World Liver Day was observed on Saturday in Mumbai, drawing attention to the increasing burden of liver-related diseases in the city. According to experts, every third adult in Mumbai has a fatty liver, which can lead to serious conditions like cirrhosis, liver cancer, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. The key to better liver health, they say, lies in following a balanced and nutritious diet.
Liver specialist Dr. Chetan Kalal emphasizes the importance of food as medicine, stating that every bite we take can either cure or harm our body, including the liver. Consuming nutrient-rich, balanced meals is crucial for liver health, especially in a city where processed foods, sugars, and fats are prevalent. Dr. Kalal warns that the combination of a Western diet, sedentary lifestyle, stress, and poor sleep habits can contribute to the development of fatty liver disease.
India currently records over 2.6 lakh deaths from liver disease each year, making it the leading contributor to global liver-related fatalities. Gastroenterologist Dr. Aditya Verma suggests that eating whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes, along with healthy fats like nuts and olive oil, can support liver function. Dr. Harshad Joshi shared a case of liver failure caused by excessive alcohol consumption, highlighting the importance of limiting alcohol intake for liver health.
On World Liver Day, the message is clear – making positive changes to your diet and lifestyle today can reduce the risk of liver disease by 50%. By prioritizing balanced nutrition, hydration, and limiting alcohol intake, individuals can take proactive steps towards maintaining a healthy liver and overall well-being.
