Judge directs ICE to bring Tufts student back to Vermont

A U.S. District Court judge has ruled that Rümeysa Öztürk, a Tufts University student detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Louisiana, must be returned to Vermont by May 1st. The judge, William Sessions, will hear Öztürk’s request to be released from detention, as her lawyers claim she is being retaliated against for an op-ed she wrote about Gaza in a student paper. Öztürk was taken by ICE agents in Massachusetts in March and has been moved to multiple locations in different states before ending up in Louisiana. Despite not being charged with any crimes, she was denied bond by an immigration judge just two days before this ruling was made. The case has garnered attention as advocates call for Öztürk’s rights to be upheld and for transparency in the immigration detention system. WCAX has reported on the developments and continues to follow the story closely. Stay tuned for updates on this important case that highlights the challenges facing immigrants in the United States.
