The Underlying Causes of Liver Diseases: Obesity and Diabetes

Liver disease is no longer just a problem for heavy drinkers—doctors are now raising concerns about the rise of advanced liver conditions in people who don’t consume alcohol. The main culprits behind this emerging crisis are obesity and diabetes, which are becoming more prevalent in India.

Experts are warning that fatty liver disease, specifically Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is on the rise among individuals with obesity and diabetes. This condition occurs when fat accumulates in the liver cells due to poor lifestyle choices and the body’s processing of fat and sugar.

If left unchecked, MASLD can progress to more severe conditions like Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. The risk factors for developing MASLD include fat accumulation around the belly and insulin resistance, which are common in individuals with obesity.

It is estimated that up to 40% of the adult population in India may be affected by NAFLD, the previous term for MASLD and MASH. The condition often shows no symptoms in its early stages, making it a silent but deadly threat.

The good news is that early-stage fatty liver disease is reversible with lifestyle changes. Experts recommend losing weight, exercising regularly, controlling blood sugar levels, avoiding junk food, and reducing alcohol consumption to improve liver health.

As we observe World Liver Day, it is crucial for individuals with obesity and diabetes to prioritize their liver health and take proactive measures to prevent irreversible damage. By making simple lifestyle modifications today, individuals can safeguard themselves against lifelong complications tomorrow. Liver health is no longer just an alcohol issue—it is a public health concern that requires immediate attention.
