Government states that Turkish student detained by ICE was relocated to Vermont prior to judge’s ruling

Tufts University doctoral student Rumeysa Ozturk, originally from Turkey, was detained by immigration authorities while walking in Somerville, Massachusetts on March 25th. She was relocated to a detention center in Basile, Louisiana due to lack of space in New England. However, a federal judge in Boston ordered that Ozturk should not be removed from the United States until further notice. The judge’s ruling was challenged by the U.S. government, arguing that the case should be dismissed or transferred to Louisiana.

Ozturk’s lawyers have argued that her detention violates her constitutional rights, including free speech and due process, and have requested for her immediate release and return to Massachusetts. Supporters of Ozturk have held rallies in Boston and at Tufts University.

The Department of Homeland Security claims that Ozturk’s visa was terminated due to her alleged support for Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist group, during the war in Gaza. However, no evidence of this support was provided by the government. Ozturk had previously written an op-ed criticizing Tufts University’s response to student demands related to Palestine.

The detainment of Ozturk is part of a larger trend of individuals with ties to American universities being targeted for their support of Palestinians. The situation is ongoing with Ozturk’s lawyers due to respond to the government’s argument. This case raises concerns about civil liberties, freedom of speech, and due process for individuals expressing political views.
