Senator Bernie Sanders recently hosted the third annual Youth Chess Day at Vermont State University in Randolph. The event aimed to encourage young people to learn and enjoy the intellectually challenging game of chess, which can help improve concentration, focus, and problem-solving skills. Over 160 young Vermonters and their parents attended the event.
Throughout the day, students of all ages and abilities had the opportunity to learn and improve their chess skills. Mentors from the UVM Chess Club, Middlebury College Chess Club, and expert players provided guidance and instruction to the participants. The event included a tournament, with winners in three different age categories.
Several young participants shared their experiences of playing chess, highlighting the focus and competitive nature of the game. Many expressed their enjoyment of the game and the satisfaction of improving their skills.
Senator Sanders commended all the young Vermonters who participated in the event and encouraged them to continue playing chess. He expressed his excitement for next year’s event. The Youth Chess Day serves as a way to promote the benefits of chess and provide young individuals with a fun and educational experience.
