Enthusiastic Student Volunteers Bring Energy to Central Vermont Medical Center: Transitioning from Classrooms to Care

High school students in Vermont are making a difference in the healthcare field through volunteering and job training opportunities at Central Vermont Medical Center and Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing. Sophomore Emily Hill and eighth grader Azalea Eagan are among the students who have been inspired to give back and gain valuable experience in the medical field.

Hill volunteers at Woodridge’s memory care unit, helping residents with meals, activities, and one-on-one time. She initially felt intimidated but quickly grew to admire and care for the residents. Eagan, whose mother is a nurse, started volunteering at a young age and is considering a career in medicine.

In addition to general volunteering opportunities, Central Vermont Medical Center has partnered with the Transitions Program to provide vocational training for students with disabilities. Program director John Boyd III emphasizes the importance of hospitals in supporting students’ transitions to post-graduation life.

Kathi Tynan, life enrichment coordinator at Woodridge, highlights the positive impact student volunteers have on residents. By sharing their energy and enthusiasm, students create meaningful connections and provide personalized experiences for residents.

Julia Page, volunteer services manager at Central Vermont Medical Center, recognizes the transformational impact volunteering can have on students. Through their experiences, students gain valuable skills, forge connections, and make a difference in the lives of others.

Overall, the influx of young enthusiasm and dedication from students is enriching the healthcare environment at Central Vermont Medical Center and Woodridge, benefiting both residents and students alike. These opportunities not only provide valuable experience in the healthcare field but also foster personal growth and community engagement.
