Wildfire in New Jersey Grows to Over 8,000 Acres, Forcing Evacuations and Interstate Closure

Evacuation orders were issued in Ocean County, New Jersey, due to a wildfire that started on Tuesday and has grown to 8,500 acres. The fire, known as the Jones Road Fire, has prompted around 3,000 people to evacuate the area. The blaze is burning in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area in Barnegat Township, and the cause is still under investigation. As of Tuesday night, the fire was only 10% contained with no reported deaths or injuries, but 1,320 structures were threatened. The Garden State Parkway, a major highway in New Jersey, had traffic diverted due to the fire, with southbound traffic being diverted at Exit 80 and northbound traffic at Exit 63.

The region where the wildfire is burning is under abnormally dry or drought conditions according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, and the New Jersey Forest Fire Service has listed the area as having a “high” fire risk. Damage assessments are underway to determine the extent of the destruction caused by the fire. Officials are working to contain the fire and protect structures as the situation continues to develop.
