Saturday Tour of Independent Bookstores in Vermont highlights state’s thriving literary scene

This past weekend, Independent Book Store Day was celebrated across the country, including in Vermont. Independent bookstores like Bridgeside Books in Waterbury play a vital role in their communities by connecting people through reading and hosting events.

To mark the occasion, Vermont bookstores are encouraging readers to participate in the Vermont Bookstore Tour. Participants can pick up a passport and get it stamped at each of the 20 participating bookstores they visit. Once completed, they can send it in for a special prize.

The tour was created a decade ago to showcase the unique offerings of Vermont’s independent bookstores, which cater to their specific communities. From Saint Albans to Brattleboro, participating bookstores offer a wide range of books and events.

Local author Aaron Starmer, who writes young adult fiction, plans to complete the tour as part of the launch of his new book, “Night Swimming.” He praises indie bookstores for their support of local authors and their role as community meeting places.

Independent bookstores like Bridgeside Books provide not only a space to purchase books but also a hub for community events and gatherings. These establishments help foster a sense of belonging and connection among readers and authors alike.
