Hong Kong Expands Hydrogen Fuel Technology Trials
Hong Kong, April 25 – The Inter-departmental Working Group on Using Hydrogen as Fuel, led by the Environment and Ecology Bureau (EEB), has granted agreement-in-principle to eight more trial projects aimed at enhancing hydrogen fuel technology.
The new projects include several innovative applications. Notably, a consortium of International New Energy Industry Alliance Limited, Wing Tat Cargo & Trading, H2 Powertrains Limited, and Ontime International Logistics will test 10 hydrogen fuel cell (HFC) goods vehicles for cross-boundary transport. Moreover, Wilson Logistics Limited plans to trial two HFC goods vehicles, while Kam Wai Tourist Bus (HK) Company will introduce two HFC coaches for local passenger services.
In addition to local transport, there are initiatives involving hydrogen power generation. The Hong Kong and China Gas Company is collaborating with multiple partners to extract hydrogen from existing towngas networks, aiming to power electric vehicle chargers at commercial sites and construction locations.
The EEB indicated that these trials are part of a broader strategy initiated in June to promote hydrogen development across regulatory, infrastructural, and technical dimensions. The strategy includes proposed safety regulations and the introduction of a green hydrogen certification standard.
As part of this initiative, funding has been earmarked under the New Energy Transport Fund to support trials of HFC heavy vehicles. Efforts will also continue towards regional collaboration, particularly in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The Working Group, which comprises multiple government departments, noted that these trials will undergo rigorous examination for safety and effectiveness, contributing to the ongoing development of hydrogen technology in Hong Kong. The operational trials are projected to commence in the first half of this year, marking a significant step toward sustainable transportation solutions.
