Several LGBTQ+ pride events scheduled for Washington, D.C.’s World Pride celebrations in May and June have been relocated from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Ryan Bos, executive director of the Capital Pride Alliance, noted that Trump’s statements were a significant factor in their decision to move events away from the Kennedy Center. He described the venue as a long-standing safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community and emphasized that the president’s message contradicts the essence of Pride. The relocated events will now occur at the World Pride Welcome Center in downtown D.C., with the orchestra’s concert shifting to Strathmore, a venue in Bethesda, Maryland.
Leaders of the International Pride Orchestra expressed disappointment at being unable to perform at the Kennedy Center but thanked Strathmore for hosting, emphasizing their commitment to spreading messages of love and resilience. Bos reassured the community that World Pride will continue despite these challenges, particularly significant this year as the nation marks 50 years of annual Pride celebrations. “World Pride is not canceled,” he affirmed, emphasizing the importance of visibility and strength within the community during this pivotal moment.
