Press Release: Museum of Fine Arts Honors John Wilson with Powerful Retrospective
Boston, MA – The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) is proud to present “Witnessing Humanity: The Art of John Wilson,” a significant retrospective celebrating the career of the local art legend and School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) alumnus. Co-organized by the MFA and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the exhibit features 110 pieces showcasing Wilson’s remarkable 60-year journey.
Born in Roxbury in 1922, Wilson’s poignant works explore themes of racial injustice, resilience, and community. Despite his local acclaim, he remained relatively unrecognized during his lifetime. Local artist Nancy Sabelski lamented the oversights in showcasing his talent, reflecting on her own late discovery of his work post-graduation.
Wilson, who taught fine art at Boston University, intricately depicted family and community through precise figurative drawings. His artwork, steeped in the Black experience and the struggles therein, resonates deeply with viewers. "He masterfully addresses tough conversations," noted Taylor Pierre, a student at Roger Williams University, emphasizing Wilson’s ability to convey the beauty in darker narratives.
Among the exhibit’s highlights are Wilson’s preliminary sketches for his lost mural “The Incident,” which captures the haunting history of lynchings. Notable pieces include the seven-foot bronze sculpture “Eternal Presence,” designed to uplift and inspire Black identity.
The exhibition also features Wilson’s tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose bust became the first sculpture of an African American displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Visitors can explore this impactful collection through June 22, included with general admission.
