Press Release: Growing Demand for EV Charging Stations at Vermont Ski Resorts
Vermont — As the ski season winds down, electric vehicle (EV) charging continues to be a focal point for mountain resort operators. Since 2021, EV registrations in Vermont have more than doubled, mirroring trends in nearby states like Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, which bring a significant number of out-of-state skiers to Vermont’s slopes.
Many Vermont ski resorts have already integrated EV charging into their amenities. Killington Mountain Resort leads the way with 47 chargers, a record for U.S. ski destinations. However, other resorts like Sugarbush face challenges, including limited charging infrastructural growth and user etiquette, with cords sometimes being left improperly, causing operational issues during winter months.
Joanna Whitcomb, a frequent skier from New Hampshire, expressed concerns about the lack of charging availability, citing “power anxiety” during visits. Margo Wade, director of planning at Sugarbush, acknowledged the importance of expansion but noted financial constraints for upgrading electric service.
Molly Mahar, president of the Vermont Ski Areas Association, emphasized that ski areas must invest in charging infrastructure not only to meet the growing demand but also to promote clean transportation. “Transportation contributes significantly to Vermont’s carbon emissions,” she pointed out, advocating for continued support of EV usage by ski area guests.
Meanwhile, the state’s ability to enhance charging infrastructure faces challenges at the federal level. In February, the Trump administration halted access to crucial federal funds for EV stations, affecting several planned installations. Despite the setback, existing charging infrastructure in Vermont comprises over 490 stations with nearly 1,300 ports.
With outdoor recreation generating $2.1 billion in economic value for Vermont, the skiing sector remains vital, underscoring the need for continued support and development of EV charging facilities at resorts.
