The recent theft of Secretary Kristi Noem’s purse has drawn attention, particularly because the suspect arrested in connection with the crime is in the U.S. illegally. Ed Martin, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, confirmed in an NBC News interview that there is a second suspect still at large, also undocumented. Martin indicated that the theft was not politically motivated, remarking that the purse’s attractiveness was likely the reason it was targeted.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is now involved in the case, aligned with President Trump’s directive to charge and deport illegal immigrants when possible. Martin assured that the suspect would not return to the streets, emphasizing the thief’s experience in executing the crime efficiently.
The incident occurred at Capital Burger in Washington, D.C., where a masked man brazenly approached Noem while she was dining with her family. Despite the presence of two plainclothes Secret Service agents, the thief managed to sit next to Noem and discreetly drag her purse towards himself before swiftly exiting with it concealed under his jacket. The stolen purse contained significant items, including $3,000 cash, Noem’s access badge, passport, credit cards, and personal identification.
The investigation involves both the Metropolitan Police and the U.S. Secret Service. When approached for comments, Noem refrained from discussing details, citing that the situation is ongoing. The Secret Service did not provide additional comments for security reasons, indicating that public information would only be released if formal criminal charges are filed. The case raises questions about security protocols, especially given Noem’s status as the Secretary of Homeland Security.
