Jack Healey Inducted into Vermont Sports Hall of Fame

BURLINGTON — On Saturday night, Jack Healey, a beloved sports broadcaster, was inducted into the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony held at the Delta Marriott Burlington. Healey’s passion for sports was ignited by Curt Gowdy’s radio broadcasts of Boston Red Sox games during his childhood. "It is a profession I always wanted to be in since I was 8 years old," he shared with the audience.

After graduating from Kimball Union Academy, Healey briefly attended Colorado State University, studying Business, before realizing broadcasting was his true calling. He completed a six-month sports broadcasting program at Career Academy in Fenway Park. Though his first application at a Massachusetts radio station didn’t lead to success, Healey later found work at WIPS in Ticonderoga, New York, where his early challenges included a humorous mishap involving jumbled tapes.

In 1971, Healey transitioned to Rutland radio, where he began covering local sports. His illustrious career involved calling games for various teams, including the Vermont Reds and the University of Vermont sports. Healey is a recipient of 20 Vermont Sportscaster of the Year accolades, and he continues to broadcast for Vermont State University Castleton at age 77.

The induction ceremony also celebrated notable connections to Norwich University, where inductees Frank Pecora and Kyle Dezotell were recognized for their impressive contributions to sports. Additionally, Bristol’s Connie LaRose, a high school basketball coaching icon, and horseshoe champion Debra Brown were honored.

Healey concluded his speech expressing gratitude for his career path, stating, "I am happy that I didn’t get the job in Newburyport. There is no place else that I’d rather be."
