Ryan Coogler’s horror film “Sinners” is making waves at the box office, proving to be more than just a one-week wonder. In its second weekend, it grossed $45 million in the U.S. and Canada, representing only a 6% drop from its Easter launch—the smallest decline for any film since “Avatar” in 2009. Globally, “Sinners” has amassed $161.6 million, indicating its appeal has transcended traditional horror audiences, attracting mainstream viewers as well.
Demographics shifted significantly, with men comprising 56% of the audience last weekend and evening out to 50/50 this weekend. Premium formats like 70mm IMAX have been particularly popular, accounting for 21% of the film’s second weekend gross—an increase from the previous weekend.
The film, which features Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twins, is praised for blending horror with elements of drama, action, and music, set in a southern gothic backdrop. According to media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, the film’s impressive second-week hold is a significant indicator of its success, contrasting with typical expectations of a 50% drop-off.
“Sinners” topped the weekend box office over major competitors, including “The Accountant 2,” which debuted in third place with $24.5 million, and a re-release of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith,” which earned around $25.2 million. The box office overall has seen a notable uptick, with April’s earnings up 102% compared to last year.
As the industry gears up for the summer movie season, starting with Disney’s “Thunderbolts” on May 2, the success of “Sinners” and other films suggests a promising outlook for theater revenues.
