Vermont Kicks Off Spring Catch-and-Release Bass Fishing Season
ESSEX, Vt. – As warmer weather arrives, Vermont gears up for its much-anticipated catch-and-release bass fishing season, a highlight for anglers across New England. Bernie Pientka, a state fisheries biologist with Vermont Fish and Wildlife, emphasized the thrill of early spring fishing, stating, “Spring catch-and-release bass fishing is a really special time to be on the water in Vermont, and the fishing can be truly spectacular.”
The catch-and-release period runs until June 14, prior to the start of the regular season when bass harvesting is permitted. During this initial phase, anglers are required to immediately release any caught bass and may only use artificial lures; live bait is prohibited.
Fisheries biologist Shawn Good highlights the advantages of pre-spawn fishing, where bass gather in concentrated areas before spawning begins. “Pre-spawn bass fishing is about targeting bass on a catch-and-release basis as they stage and concentrate around areas close to where they plan on spawning,” said Good. The optimal water temperature for this activity ranges from 48°F to 56°F, encouraging bass to move into shallower waters.
Good cautioned inexperienced anglers against targeting nesting bass, which tend not to feed during this time. Instead, he recommended focusing on pre-spawn bass, which are more active and easier to catch.
Vermont Fish and Wildlife suggests that anglers adapt their tactics based on water temperature and use slow jig-style baits early in the season, transitioning to faster-moving lures as the water warms. Anglers are advised to scout rocky shorelines and marshy bays, as these areas attract hungry bass.
