The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its latest inductees for 2023, featuring first-time nominees Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, and Bad Company, alongside renowned acts like Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, the White Stripes, and Soundgarden. Additionally, Salt-N-Pepa, recognized as the first female rap group to attain gold and platinum status, and the late Warren Zevon will receive the Musical Influence Award. The Musical Excellence Award honors late producer Thom Bell, pianist Nicky Hopkins, and bassist Carol Kaye.
Joe Cocker, celebrated for his performance at Woodstock and his iconic cover of The Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” has garnered support from notable artists including Billy Joel and Billy Gibbons. Soundgarden, with the late Chris Cornell, enters the Hall after three nominations, joining fellow grunge legends Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bad Company is recognized for enduring radio hits like “Feel Like Makin’ Love” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy.”
The Ahmet Ertegun Award will be presented to Lenny Waronker, a key figure in the industry known for signing influential artists such as Prince and R.E.M. Notable nominees who will not be inducted this year include Mariah Carey, Billy Idol, and Oasis.
Chubby Checker, known for “The Twist,” has expressed frustration over his previous exclusion, while Lauper became a household name in the 1980s with hits like “Time After Time.” OutKast and the White Stripes are also noted for their significant contributions to hip-hop and indie rock, respectively. The induction ceremony is scheduled for this fall in Los Angeles, following a voting process involving over 1,200 industry professionals.
