MTA Reports 30% Drop in Subway Fare Evasion
CITYWIDE— Subway fare evasion across the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has seen a significant decline, plummeting 30% from the second quarter of 2024 to the first quarter of 2025. Governor Kathy Hochul announced this positive development as part of the MTA’s ongoing efforts to enhance fare collection and curb fare evasion.
The MTA’s multi-pronged strategy has focused on equity, education, enforcement, and environmental improvements to address fare evasion. As part of this initiative, the agency is preparing to install modern fare gates at select subway stations. Three Brooklyn locations—Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center, Nostrand Avenue, and Crown Heights-Utica Avenue—will serve as pilot sites for these new gates.
In addition to upcoming gate installations, the MTA has already implemented various systemwide turnstile modifications. Emergency exits at 70 stations have been equipped with delayed egress features, and turnstile sleeves and fins have been introduced, leading to a reported 60% decrease in turnstile jumping. Gate guards have also been deployed to further deter fare evasion.
The MTA is currently evaluating potential vendors, including Conduent, Cubic, Scheidt & Bachmann, and STraffic, to provide and test the new fare gates at select stations, ensuring that the final decision reflects the best options for enhancing fare collection.
These measures demonstrate the MTA’s commitment to improving public transit integrity and accessibility, aiming for a more equitable and operationally sound transit experience for all riders. With ongoing adaptations and enhancements, the MTA seeks to maintain this downward trend in fare evasion moving forward.
