Chris Krebs, the former leader of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), expressed his outrage at the Trump administration’s drastic cuts to cybersecurity personnel during the RSA Conference in San Francisco. This marked his first public comments since President Trump targeted him for investigation for affirming the 2020 election’s integrity. Krebs criticized the administration for undermining national security by reducing vital cybersecurity staff, contractors, and programs.
He argued that cybersecurity is crucial for national security, emphasizing the need for robust defense against significant cybersecurity threats, particularly given recent hacking incidents linked to China, such as Salt Typhoon, Volt Typhoon, and Flax Typhoon. Krebs urged for increased investments in Cyber Command and additional resources at the NSA, as well as more frontline defenders and threat hunters, rather than downsizing efforts.
Since January, the Trump administration has implemented cuts to CISA, including the termination of probationary employees and advisory committees, along with encouraging retirements. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees CISA, confirmed these reductions but did not comment on Krebs’ statements.
Krebs remains a respected figure in the cybersecurity community, and his recent comments received applause from industry professionals. While the Electronic Frontier Foundation published an open letter in support of Krebs, signatories included mostly smaller entities and none from major cybersecurity firms, reflecting a cautious stance among industry leaders wary of antagonizing the Trump administration.
