Press Release: Museum of Natural History Innovates for Turtle’s Mobility
Halifax, Nova Scotia — April 28 (UPI): The Museum of Natural History in Halifax has made headlines for its inventive approach to improving the mobility of a resident wood turtle named Root. The turtle, which came to the museum from Shubenacadie Wildlife Park in September, is missing its front right foot, causing its shell to drag and potentially leading to further shell damage.
Heather McKinnon Ramshaw, the museum’s animal care specialist, noted that the uneven leg length resulted in Root "clunking" its shell against the ground. Concerned about the turtle’s well-being, the staff sought a solution to provide Root with better support during walks.
Inspired by a Lego exhibit at the museum, naturalist interpreter Tessa Biesterfeld devised a creative mobility aid using a small dog harness, a Lego platform, and Lego wheels. "It’s non-toxic, and we can easily replace parts as needed," Biesterfeld explained. The modularity of the design allows for adjustments as Root grows and changes.
Thanks to this innovative contraption, Root now demonstrates a newfound enthusiasm for exploring the museum. "When I snap his harness on, it’s like he hears that snap and gets ready to go," said Biesterfeld.
This heartfelt initiative exemplifies the museum’s commitment to animal care and showcases the potential of creative problem-solving to enhance the lives of vulnerable wildlife. The custom mobility aid not only supports Root but also enriches his experiences at the museum, turning educational outings into joyful adventures.
As Root continues to thrive in his new environment, he has captured the hearts of staff and visitors alike, proving that compassion and creativity can go hand in hand in caring for our wildlife.
