Vermont Nonprofits Rally at Legislative Day Amid Federal Uncertainty
Montpelier, VT – April 22, 2025 – Nonprofit leaders from across Vermont gathered in Montpelier for Nonprofit Legislative Day, engaging with policymakers on critical issues facing their organizations and communities. The event, organized by Common Good Vermont, facilitated networking and discussions on significant developments affecting the nonprofit sector, particularly amid the shifting political landscape.
Participants began the day by sharing insights about their vital roles in economic development committees. A panel discussion featuring Senator Kesha Ram Hinsdale emphasized the urgent need for nonprofits. “This is a beyond critical time to be filling in the gaps and keeping people whole and healthy,” she remarked.
The backdrop to this gathering was a series of recent federal actions impacting nonprofits, especially those reliant on federal funding. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has taken unprecedented measures, including commandeering the grants.gov website and encroaching on nonprofit operations. Vermont organizations such as the Vermont Humanities Council and the Vermont Historical Society have faced abrupt funding cuts, jeopardizing essential services in education, health, and social justice.
During National Volunteer Week, AmeriCorps staff were put on leave, further threatening community service efforts. Two proposed congressional bills also aim to strip 501(c)(3) status from nonprofits supporting undocumented immigrants, highlighting the precarious situation for many organizations.
Emma Paradis from Common Good Vermont stated, “Abrupt federal actions have created unprecedented challenges for Vermont’s nonprofit sector.” Amid these trials, the organization remains committed to advocating for and supporting the sector, reinforcing their critical role in fostering community resilience.
As Vermont nonprofits navigate this uncertain landscape, Common Good Vermont stands as a key resource, advocating for the integrity and sustainability of the vital services they provide. For more information, visit www.commongoodvt.org.
