Vermont Man Convicted of Ammunition Charges
BENNINGTON, Vt. — Max Misch, a 42-year-old resident of Bennington, was found guilty on two counts of possessing large-capacity ammunition magazines, according to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office. The verdict came after a one-day jury trial held on Monday, where Misch, who has self-identified as a white supremacist and internet troll, faced misdemeanor charges stemming from a February 2019 investigation.
Despite pleading not guilty during the trial, Misch has been ordered to remain released on conditions while he awaits sentencing. He faces a potential maximum penalty of one year in prison or a fine of up to $500, with sentencing scheduled in the next 60 days.
This isn’t the first time Misch has made headlines. In 2021, former Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan sought to confine him to 24/7 house arrest following charges of domestic assault. Misch has a history of various other legal troubles, including disrupting the creation of a "Black Lives Matter" mural in Bennington and using racial slurs against a Black man in 2020.
Notably, Misch was not charged for openly harassing former state Rep. Kiah Morris, Vermont’s first female Black legislator, who cited racist threats and harassment as factors in her resignation in 2018.
The verdict represents just one chapter in a troubling pattern of behavior linked to Misch, reflecting larger societal issues surrounding hate and discrimination. As the community awaits his sentencing, many are concerned about the implications of his actions and the message it sends regarding accountability for hate-based crimes.
