Vermont Senate Condemns Immigrant Arrest Amid Controversy

MONTPELIER, April 15, 2025 — In a significant move, the Vermont Senate voted 24-5 to condemn the recent arrest of Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian activist and resident, by federal immigration agents. The resolution, S.R.13, calls for Mahdawi’s immediate release from the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans Town as his case progresses through federal court.

The resolution’s passage comes just a day ahead of a critical court hearing in Burlington that may determine if Mahdawi, who has been detained for over two weeks, will be released. Lead sponsor Sen. Becca White, D-Windsor, expressed concern over the circumstances of Mahdawi’s arrest, which occurred during an appointment at a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Colchester. Armed and masked agents detained him, prompting widespread criticism.

Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Baruth emphasized the urgency of Mahdawi’s situation, stressing the Senate’s connection to the issue through firsthand witness accounts. He asserted the need to defend due process rights against what he views as a troubling pattern of similar arrests of students.

The dissenting votes stemmed from Republican senators who questioned the procedure of Mahdawi’s arrest. Sen. David Weeks, R-Rutland, remarked that while unusual, the tactics were consistent with law enforcement practices. Others, including Sen. Russ Ingalls, R-Essex, dismissed the resolution’s significance amidst broader immigration concerns.

Additionally, the Vermont House expressed similar criticism of Mahdawi’s detention in a prior vote, further highlighting the political and community implications surrounding immigration enforcement. Mahdawi, who sought citizenship after ten years in the U.S., remains steadfast in his pursuit of justice despite facing legal challenges.
