Ethnos360, a Florida-based Christian organization formerly known as New Tribes Mission, is facing a lawsuit alleging that one of its missionaries sexually assaulted a minor, Kayla McClain, 15 years ago while the family lived in Indonesia. The lawsuit claims the organization failed to provide care or professional assistance after McClain reported inappropriate conduct in 2012, two years after the organization received recommendations for improved child safety training.
McClain, now 24, publicly identified herself, stating, “I’m tired of being quiet.” She alleges that Nathan Horling, the missionary in question, sexually abused her starting at age five and escalated the abuse when both families relocated in 2009. The organization has previously addressed multiple similar accusations; in 2019, women reported being abused by “dorm dads” at Ethnos360’s boarding schools, prompting several settlements and a public apology.
Despite Ethnos360’s claims of having established child safety protocols—such as background checks and training—McClain’s family experienced a lack of adequate response from the organization’s child safety team, which dismissed the reported behaviors as typical child exploration. After returning to the U.S., McClain struggled with significant mental health issues, including PTSD, and reported her experience to Ethnos360 in 2021; however, she states that the subsequent investigation didn’t offer support or report the abuse to authorities.
The lawsuit accuses Ethnos360 of negligence in protecting McClain and seeks unspecified damages. McClain emphasizes the need for accountability, aiming to break the silence around these issues.
