Rutland Teachers Allege Unfair Negotiation Practices Amid Contract Dispute
RUTLAND, Vt. (WCAX) – Teachers in Rutland are alleging that the school district is employing coercive tactics during ongoing contract negotiations. The Rutland Education Association (REA) has filed a complaint claiming that the school board has threatened job termination for educators unless they agree to a previous contract offer. Since July, Marble City teachers have been without an agreement, despite the union initiating discussions with the board in December 2023.
A recent fact-finding report by a mediator recommended a 14.8 percent salary increase for teachers over three years. However, according to Sue Tanen of the REA, the district did not accept these findings and instead communicated layoffs to teachers. “Historically, this district has gone to fact-finding multiple times, with both sides accepting the reports. This is the first instance I recall where the district has rejected the conclusion of a fact-finder,” Tanen stated.
The situation highlights a significant shift in negotiation practices that could affect teacher morale and retention. School district officials have acknowledged receipt of the union’s filing but refrained from further comments. Both parties are scheduled to reconvene for negotiations next Monday, as the dispute continues to escalate.
