Judge Releases Palestinian Student Amid Controversy Over Immigration Arrest
A Vermont judge released Mohsen Mahdawi, a 34-year-old Palestinian student at Columbia University, on Wednesday after his arrest by immigration officials during a citizenship interview. Mahdawi had been leading protests against Israel’s war in Gaza, which has resulted in significant Palestinian casualties. His release marks a significant victory for his cause and sets a precedent for others in similar situations.
Mahdawi, who has lived as a legal permanent resident in the U.S. for ten years, was detained since April 14. Upon his release, he was greeted by hundreds of supporters chanting slogans like “No fear” and “Free Palestine.” In a powerful statement, Mahdawi emphasized the need for people to unite in defense of democracy and humanity, declaring, “We want to stand up for humanity, because the rest of the world is watching us.”
U.S. District Judge Geoffrey Crawford stated that Mahdawi raised "substantial claims" that his arrest aimed to suppress political speech, asserting that even controversial actions should be protected under the First Amendment. He criticized the government’s assertion that Mahdawi posed a national security threat, pointing to a closed FBI investigation as lacking substantive evidence.
The U.S. government’s attempts to deport Mahdawi faced backlash, with allegations stemming from Secretary of State Marco Rubio claiming his presence could jeopardize U.S. foreign policy interests. The judge’s ruling reflects a broader critique of government actions perceived as targeting dissent, likening them to historical witch hunts.
Mahdawi is set to appear before an immigration judge in Louisiana shortly, while other students like Mahdawi’s colleague, Mahmoud Khalil, remain detained. The growing number of arrests and visa revocations among protesting students has raised concerns about civil liberties in the U.S.
Columbia University has pledged to ensure due process for all students, further highlighting the tension between academic freedom and governmental scrutiny.
