Legendary Essex High School Coach Bill O’Neil Passes Away at 83
BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Bill O’Neil, a distinguished three-sport coach and a devoted educator at Essex High School for 45 years, passed away on Saturday at the age of 83 after a prolonged battle with cancer.
During his remarkable tenure with the Hornets, O’Neil made an indelible mark on the local and state sports community, achieving an impressive 24 state championships and nearly 1,300 total wins across boys hockey, girls soccer, and softball. His influence extended beyond just victories, inspiring countless young athletes throughout his career.
Not only was O’Neil a coaching legend, but he was also a three-sport star during his own days at Norwich. His exceptional contributions to sports have earned him induction into several prestigious halls of fame, including those at his alma mater, the Vermont Principals Association, the Vermont Sports Hall of Fame, and the National Federation of High Schools.
