Restoration of Iconic Vermont Fire Towers to Begin This Summer
Montpelier, VT – May 1, 2023 – The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation (FPR) is set to initiate a crucial restoration project this summer for several of the state’s historic fire towers, originally built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The effort aims to enhance safety and maintain these iconic structures, which have transitioned from forest fire monitoring to recreational landmarks.
FPR has secured $450,000 in funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration for significant maintenance and safety improvements at the Bear Hill and Burke Mountain fire towers. In addition, $60,000 from the Recreational Trails Program will support the installation of safety railings at five other fire towers, including Spruce Mountain and Bald Mountain, with the entire project extending into spring 2026.
Valley Restoration, LLC, a specialized firm from Litchfield, Connecticut, will undertake the restoration efforts. Work at the Bear Hill fire tower in Allis State Park will take place from May 1 to June 15, followed by renovations at Burke Mountain from May 15 to July 31. Additional installation of railings at other towers will be scheduled later in the summer, with expected shorter closures.
“These fire towers are an important piece of Vermont’s forest management history and provide a unique way for Vermonters and our visitors to enjoy our public lands,” remarked Oliver Pierson, Director of the Forests Division.
