Vermont House Transportation Committee Explores Bicycle Safety Legislation
MONTPELIER, VT — In a recent session, Rep. Phil Pouech, D-Hinesburg, presented a proposal before the House Transportation Committee that aims to enhance bicycle safety in Vermont. The initiative, inspired by an Idaho law, would permit cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs, enabling them to navigate intersections without making a full stop when no vehicles or pedestrians are present.
This "Idaho stop" legislation, which advocates argue could lead to safer cycling, is already in effect in 11 states. Pouech’s amendment would also allow cyclists to abide by pedestrian signals at intersections, a move he claims could reduce accident rates. The amendment was discussed during the committee’s consideration of the annual miscellaneous motor vehicle bill, S.123, which has received initial approval from the Senate.
Local Motion’s programs director, Jonathon Weber, supported the proposal, stating that many cyclists already adopt these practices for safety. Research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that laws allowing cyclists to yield at stop signs have contributed to lower crash rates, particularly in suburban areas. "Vermonters shouldn’t have to break the law to engage in safe cycling behaviors," Weber emphasized.
The committee, which is expected to revisit the amendment soon, has yet to finalize its stance on Pouech’s proposals. As the legislation moves forward, it signifies an important step in fostering a more cyclist-friendly environment in Vermont.
In unrelated news, lawmakers are also addressing flooding concerns as they work on the state’s budget and transportation bills.
