Judge Orders Release of Palestinian Student Amid Immigration Controversy
A Vermont judge granted release on Wednesday to Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian student and activist at Columbia University, who was arrested during an immigration interview aimed at finalizing his U.S. citizenship. Mahdawi, 34, has been a legal permanent resident since 2014 and has been vocal in leading protests against Israel’s military actions in Gaza, which have resulted in over 52,000 Palestinian casualties.
Emerging from court, Mahdawi was greeted by hundreds of supporters chanting “No fear” and “Free Palestine.” He emphasized the importance of standing up for justice and humanity, stating, “We want to stand up for humanity, because the rest of the world is watching us.”
Despite the U.S. government’s claims that Mahdawi posed a national security threat due to his activism, U.S. District Judge Geoffrey Crawford noted that the arrest appeared aimed at suppressing free speech. He remarked that Mahdawi’s conduct is protected under the First Amendment, stating, “Even if he were a firebrand, his conduct is protected.”
The case has drawn parallels to historical government overreach, with the judge referencing past political crackdowns. Mahdawi’s attorney indicated that the government has opened an immigration case against him based on accusations that were closed earlier.
Mahdawi’s release comes amidst broader concerns for international students, as over 1,000 have reportedly seen their visas revoked or legal status terminated in recent months, often linked to activism. Mahdawi can now legally travel outside Vermont and is expected to graduate next month.
Outside the courthouse, he defiantly addressed the Trump administration, reinforcing his message of love and resilience against fear. Mahdawi’s case remains a focal point in the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policy and free speech in America.
