Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) secured a decisive victory in the recent general elections, extending its uninterrupted rule since 1959. With the PAP winning 82 out of 97 Parliamentary seats and receiving 65.6% of the popular vote—an increase from 61% in 2020—Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who took office a year ago, is bolstered by this reaffirmation of public support. Celebrations erupted among PAP supporters as Wong expressed gratitude for their trust and pledged to work harder.
Despite the PAP’s strong showing, the opposition Workers Party maintained its 10 seats and did not achieve further inroads. Law professor Eugene Tan noted the unexpected nature of the results, suggesting that voters opted for the stability that the PAP has historically provided. Wong, a finance minister and U.S.-trained economist, has emphasized the need for a solid mandate to navigate the economic challenges posed by global issues, including U.S. tariffs, which have led to a lowered growth forecast and recession warnings.
While the PAP enjoys a strong reputation for stability, criticisms around government control, rising living costs, income disparity, and overcrowding are creating discontent, particularly among younger voters. The opposition aimed to push for a more balanced political landscape but faces challenges such as limited resources and fragmentation in support. Pritam Singh, leader of the Workers Party, acknowledged the tough competition and expressed a commitment to continue striving for a more equitable Parliament.
Political analyst Bridget Welsh indicated that voters were drawn to Wong’s approachable leadership and the PAP’s efforts to renew its ranks with new members, which helped consolidate their victory amid economic uncertainty.
