Waking Windows Music Festival to Bid Farewell After 11 Memorable Years
WINOOSKI, Vt. — This weekend marks the final chapter of the beloved Waking Windows music festival, which has showcased local talent for over a decade in Winooski. The festival, which began over 11 years ago, has become a cherished tradition, bringing together dozens of bands for one last celebratory performance through Sunday.
Musician Bobby Hackney, who will play with two bands during the festival, expressed mixed emotions about the event’s conclusion. "It makes me feel a little bit sad. At the same time, I’m just happy it’s been happening for the last 11 years," he said, reflecting on the festival’s significance to the community.
Organizers made the tough decision to end the festival this year after years of hard work that took a toll on their resources. "We had to make sure we came out this year for the last go-around,” said Collin Hagood, a Burlington resident. Local businesses, like Four Quarters, are also excited to participate. Cat Mcdougal from Four Quarters stated, "I think people need it. We really don’t have a lot of those moments to come together and celebrate."
The festival has become a platform for many to showcase their talents for the first time. DJ Kristen Detroia highlighted the communal spirit, saying, "Ever since moving here, I’ve seen that community is everything."
Despite the festival’s closure, some remaining hopeful believe that organizers could surprise attendees with future events. "Even though the festival won’t happen anymore, they may still surprise us with something else," Hackney commented.
Waking Windows will run through Sunday, with the final band set to perform around 10 p.m.
