McVeigh: A Perspective on Law Day 2025

Press Release: Celebrating Law Day 2025: A Call to Defend Democracy

On May 1, 2025, Law Day will be commemorated nationwide, emphasizing the fundamental importance of the rule of law that underpins the United States’ democratic governance. From municipal ordinances to federal statutes, the day serves as a reminder of the nation’s commitment to maintaining a balanced system of governance.

Historically, the Founding Fathers recognized the pitfalls of fragmented power, leading to the establishment of the Constitution in 1787. This pivotal document introduced a three-branch system: the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judiciary, ensuring no single branch could monopolize power. Despite this framework, recent actions under the current administration have raised alarms about the erosion of these checks and balances.

Former members of President Donald Trump’s administration have drafted a controversial plan known as Project 2025, which aims to consolidate power in the Executive Branch. Critics argue that this threatens the very fabric of American democracy. Trump’s administration has enacted over 200 executive orders aimed at centralizing authority, including the controversial utilization of the Alien Enemy Act to deport immigrants without due process.

As Law Day approaches, citizens are urged to unite in defense of the Constitution. Many view the current trends as a significant departure from America’s democratic principles. The House of Representatives and Senate have reportedly relinquished power, raising concerns over the protection of individual rights.

On Saturday, May 3, a protest march organized by legal advocates will take place starting at 12 noon, from Chittenden Superior Court to the federal courthouse, highlighting the call to restore the balance of power within the government.

As we honor Law Day, it’s crucial that citizens actively participate in safeguarding democracy and ensuring that the rights granted by the Constitution remain intact. Chris McVeigh of Middlesex encourages all to raise their voices and take action for a government that respects the rule of law.
