An online fundraiser, allegedly for a Minnesota woman who called a child the N-word in a viral video, has raised over $675,000, attracting numerous donations from users espousing white supremacist views. Donors with names like “White Unity Will Unite” and “Whitestandstrong” contributed funds alongside pro-racist comments, many of which were subsequently removed. The page was set up after an incident from April 28, when a woman was recorded verbally attacking a child of Somali descent at a Rochester park, accusing him of theft. The fundraiser claims to assist the woman, whose family allegedly faces threats and has had personal information leaked. However, NBC News has yet to verify the woman’s identity or her connection to the page.
Heather Wilson, also a co-founder of GiveSendGo, stated that no funds would be released until the campaign’s verification process was complete. In contrast, the local NAACP had raised $341,484 in support of the child involved in the incident, reinforcing solidarity with the family. This divergence highlights the contentious narrative around race in America, with the police completing their investigation into the altercation, now submitted to the city attorney. Meanwhile, donors supporting the woman encouraged her to resist apologies and emphasized a divide against Black individuals, revealing the ongoing tensions surrounding race relations.
