Shelburne Museum Unveils New Exhibitions Blending Art and History
Shelburne, VT – The Shelburne Museum will open its doors for the season this Saturday, showcasing six new exhibits that highlight the seamless fusion of contemporary art and historical artifacts. This year’s offerings have been in development for over a year, continuing the legacy of Electra Havermeyer Webb, the museum’s founder, who aimed to connect the past with modern artistic expressions.
Director of Communications, Leslie Wright, emphasized the museum’s commitment to remaining relevant through its dynamic programming. Featured on the lawn are large bronze horse sculptures by Karen Petersen, reflecting primitive art forms, alongside a series of fiber and textile animal sculptures by Dahlov Ipcar. Notable, too, is an exhibit of gig posters from Higher Ground, celebrating local music history, and porcelain works from Mara Superior that cleverly echo the forms of centuries-old crafts.
A key highlight will be David Sokosh’s innovative cyanotype photography, directly linking to the museum’s collection. Sokosh, who grew up visiting the museum, has created a series of blue-and-white images using a process that dates back to 1842. His fascination with technology and historical objects served as inspiration for the exhibit. It includes a unique "cyanoanimation" crafted from over 6,000 frames, showcasing a contemporary take on the museum’s historical treasures.
Other pieces in this year’s lineup mirror this theme of reflective art. Each exhibition invites visitors to explore how contemporary interpretations can breathe life into historical narratives. Educational programming, including workshops and a summer concert series, is also planned to engage the community.
In a gesture of goodwill, admission will be free on opening day, inviting the public to experience the intersection of art and history at the museum.
