Daniel Orellana, a 25-year-old Guatemalan man with no prior criminal record, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at a Shell gas station in Framingham, Massachusetts, while on his way to work. His family asserts that he was wrongfully detained, with his father, Arquimedes Orellana, stating, “It’s not fair that he’s going through this and being treated like a criminal.”
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. when ICE agents intercepted Daniel and questioned him about another individual, during which he insisted he did not know the person in question. The agents seized his phone and arrested him after inquiring about his immigration status. A gas station employee confirmed the arrest took place inside the station, leaving Daniel’s vehicle behind.
After hours of searching, Daniel’s family was eventually able to locate his vehicle, later receiving a call from Daniel himself informing them of his detention. His girlfriend, Zulema Alfaro, stated he described it as a misunderstanding but reported that ICE insisted on detaining him regardless. The Orellana family emigrated from Guatemala three years prior to escape violence, with Daniel on the brink of graduating with a law degree, having come to the U.S. in search of safety but without proper documentation.
Despite the government’s enforcement policies, Arquimedes expressed concern, saying, “It’s not fair that they take innocent people, people who are productive for the country.” The family has engaged a lawyer to assist with Daniel’s case, who is currently held in an immigration detention center in Plymouth, with hopes for a swift resolution. Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra has requested information from ICE but has not received a response.
