Koppö Energia Chooses thyssenkrupp Uhde for Pioneering Green Methanol Project
Koppö Energia Oy has announced its decision to implement thyssenkrupp Uhde’s cutting-edge green methanol technology in its upcoming e-methanol plant in Kristinestad, Finland. This initiative forms part of a larger power-to-x (P2X) project designed to produce e-methanol at a capacity of 450 metric tons per day (mtpd) for diverse applications, including maritime fuel and e-gasoline.
Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde, expressed pride in contributing to this innovative project, emphasizing its significance as a testament to successful cross-industry collaboration in establishing green methanol as a sustainable fuel option.
Unlike conventional grey methanol derived from natural gas, green methanol is produced through the direct hydrogenation of CO2, which significantly reduces carbon emissions. This process utilizes renewable hydrogen generated from a 200MW water electrolysis plant powered by green electricity and water. CO2 necessary for the production will be captured from waste incineration facilities in Vaasa, Finland, subsequently liquefied and transported to the facility.
Thomas Zirngibl, Director at Koppö Energia, highlighted their satisfaction in partnering with thyssenkrupp Uhde, praising their technological expertise and integration capabilities for smooth project execution.
The uhde® green methanol technology not only promises enhanced economic returns but also demonstrates significant ecological advantages. Its patented process ensures high efficiencies for carbon and hydrogen, resulting in minimal purge gas emissions and a lower overall carbon footprint for the project.
This collaboration marks a significant advancement in the shift towards sustainable energy and the development of green fuels, furthering the goals of both Koppö Energia and thyssenkrupp Uhde in promoting eco-friendly alternatives.
