Virginia Teen Killed by Homeowner While Filming TikTok Prank

In a tragic incident in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, an 18-year-old named Michael Bosworth, Jr. was shot and killed while participating in a “ding-dong ditch” prank with friends, intended for a TikTok video. The homeowner, 27-year-old Tyler Chase Butler, has been arrested and faces charges including second-degree murder and malicious wounding. The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. when Butler believed the teens were attempting to break into his home.

Deputies were called to the scene following reports of gunfire, finding Bosworth and another juvenile wounded. Bosworth succumbed to his injuries after being hospitalized, while the surviving juvenile was treated and released. A third juvenile was unharmed. According to an affidavit, one of the teens explained to investigators that they had been pranking at multiple houses in the area, emphasizing their intention was purely for amusement. They ran to hide when shots were fired.

Bosworth was a senior at Massaponax High School, and he was killed just hours before the school’s prom. In response to his death, the school district announced that counselors would be available to support students and staff during this difficult time. Butler remains in custody at Rappahannock Regional Jail with no bond while further details regarding his legal representation are uncertain. The incident has raised significant concerns regarding gun violence and the consequences of seemingly innocent juvenile pranks.
