Sims is set to be arraigned on one count of murder, facing a potential sentence of 25 years to life.
Ralston’s friends had reported her missing after she left the bar with an unidentified man, and her vehicle was later discovered in a nearby apartment complex. Efforts by investigators to connect Sims to the evidence were initially unsuccessful until the FBI’s algorithm upgrade. Baker noted the importance of latent print searches and the role of advanced tools like STRmix, which can analyze complex DNA mixtures previously deemed unusable.
