Election Countdown: Sanders Faces Malloy in Upcoming Debate
As Election Day 2024 approaches in less than two weeks, voters across the nation prepare to select the next U.S. President. Here in Vermont, the spotlight is on the contest for the U.S. Senate seat held by Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who faces a challenge from Republican Gerald Malloy.
A live debate between the two candidates is set for Friday night at 8 p.m. at the NBC5 Studio in South Burlington. They will discuss pressing issues such as the economy, healthcare, and the role of Vermont’s representative on the national stage. Sanders, at 83, is seeking a fourth term and has voiced concerns that democracy in America is "under threat." Meanwhile, Malloy, 62, is running for the Senate seat again after losing to Democrat Peter Welch in the 2022 election. He claims to have engaged with tens of thousands of Vermonters, emphasizing their desire for change and his vision for a new direction.
Political scientist Matt Dickinson of Middlebury College notes that Malloy faces a significant challenge, stating, "It’s very hard to defeat an incumbent senator." Historically, about 85% of incumbents succeed in their reelection campaigns. Vermont’s political landscape also leans heavily in favor of Sanders, a factor complicating Malloy’s campaign. Nonetheless, the former defense contractor is resolute in his aim to "rebuild unity and make progress" on the pressing issues the state faces.
Vermont voters are encouraged to watch the debate live on NBC5, which promises to illuminate the key differences between the two candidates ahead of the crucial election.
