Palestinian Student Freed Amid Controversy Over Protests Against Gaza Violence
A Vermont judge released Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian graduate student from Columbia University, on Wednesday after he was arrested during a citizenship interview. Mahdawi, a vocal advocate against Israel’s war in Gaza, had been detained since April 14, highlighting growing concerns regarding the U.S. government’s treatment of activists.
Mahdawi, who organized protests and co-founded the Palestinian Student Union at Columbia, left the courthouse to a rallying crowd chanting, “No fear” and “Free Palestine.” During his address, he urged solidarity for justice globally, stating, “The rest of the world — not only Palestine — is watching us.”
The U.S. government argued for his removal under the Immigration and Nationality Act, suggesting his activism posed a national security threat. However, U.S. District Judge Geoffrey Crawford dismissed these claims, asserting Mahdawi’s First Amendment rights were being infringed upon. Crawford noted the government’s attempts to stifle dissent resonated disturbingly with historical political persecutions.
The case of Mahdawi is not isolated; federal immigration actions have increasingly targeted college students involved in protests. Since late March, over 1,000 students nationwide have faced visa revocations, prompting legal challenges and a policy reversal by the government regarding international student statuses.
Mahdawi now awaits an immigration hearing while preparing for graduation, signaling a broader discourse on political expression and freedom within educational institutions. Columbia University spokesperson Millie Wert emphasized the necessity of due process for all, regardless of citizenship.
During his release, Mahdawi proclaimed, “Love is our way,” asserting courage against political repression and underscoring the critical nature of supporting human rights on a global scale.
