The honor was bestowed during the Spring Commencement on May 10, 2025, celebrating his contributions to wildlife conservation and outdoor education.

He earned his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in creative nonfiction writing from the University of Montana in 2000, further cementing his connection to the institution and the state.
