China is already a significant trading partner for Latin America, with trade volumes exceeding $500 billion in 2022—up from just $12 billion in 2000. The country has been actively investing in Latin America, evidenced by significant projects like the $1.3 billion Chancay port in Peru. Xi announced plans to increase imports from Latin America, boost Chinese investments, and provide $9.1 billion in fresh financing, while advocating for deeper involvement in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
As Latin American countries reassess their alliances, many are finding China’s approach—characterized by more equitable partnerships—increasingly appealing compared to historical relationships with the U.S. and European powers.
